When undertaking any project, it’s important to think ahead to how the end result is going to look. Sometimes we’ll start a DIY job and half way through think that we should have used different materials, or find that it doesn’t look like you expected it to. This is particularly frustrating when you’ve spend valuable time and money and you’ve either got to scrap it and start again from scratch, or else just deal with something you’re not happy with.
This is true of many interior design jobs, which is why it’s important to think of every factor before you make a start. One of these factors is the size of your room. If you’re thinking about tiling your bathroom, then it’s vital to tile it according to its size; here are just a few tips to take into consideration before you start work.
Colours and Patterns
One of the most important things to think about it what colour scheme you’re going to go for. Small rooms don’t benefit from darker colours, which is why a lot of bathrooms are tiled and painted in light, neutral colours. Choosing dark colours will automatically make your bathroom look smaller and more cramped, but light creams and beiges will create the illusion of more space.
The same goes for busy patterns. Having busy printed tiles or wallpaper will make your bathroom look crowded and confined. Plainer tiles and decor are a much better choice, but if you wanted a tile with a slightly more interesting finish, then dotting metallic colours in with the rest of your wall tiles will give it that extra lift!
Tile Size
You would think that a bigger tile size might be lost in a small bathroom, but choosing tiles that are too small will cause the arrangement to look cluttered, especially when the floor and walls have been grouted which causes more of a contrast. Mosaic tiles look lovely on bathroom walls, so if you wanted to benefit from a mosaic look but don’t want your space to look cramped, then perhaps mosaic one wall, or have a motif tiled in with plainer tiles.
Materials and Finishes
Even the smallest of details can make the world of difference and can make your space look bigger than it actually is. Choosing tiles with a matte finish may make your room look dull and will close the space, whereas choosing tiles with a glossy finish or shine will help to reflect light around the room – this can be especially handy if your room doesn’t benefit from a lot of natural lighting.
Natural materials which have a shine to them would include tiles made of polished marble, or perhaps glass tiles for your walls.
