When it comes to flooring, we’re sure we would all love an option that requires little to no effort in order to stay looking pristine and beautiful, however in reality, all materials require at least a little TLC to provide long-lasting style.
When it comes to flooring, ceramic tiles are actually rather easy to care for, and are pretty much maintenance-free. Of course though, just to keep them shining – you can always give them a little spruce along the way.
With thousands of design possibilities, ceramic tiles boast a variety of looks that endure. So, here are a few great and simple ways to maintain your tile’s original quality for years to come!
Regular Ceramic Tile Care
Glazed tiles – Wipe glazed wall tiles periodically using a cloth or sponge dampened with a non oil-based household cleaner. Vacuum glazed floor tiles regularly in order to remove dirt and other gritty particles, then damp mop or sponge with an all-purpose, non oil-based cleaner.
Tip: do not use ammonia as this will discolour grout.
Non-glazed tiles – Clean unglazed wall and floor tiles in a similar manner, using a solution of water and soapless detergent instead of an all-purpose cleaner.
Grout Care
Once the tile has been cleaned and dried, grout joints should be treated with a silicone sealer. Grout, the material used to fill the spaces between tiles, is porous, and sealing it at this time will simplify maintenance in the future.
Tip: Apply a sealer at least twice a year for maximum stain protection.
The Do’s & Don’ts
- DO test scouring powders on a small area first (not recommended for cleaning natural stone tiles)
- DO use a sealer on grout joints
- DO have any damaged or broken tiles removed and replaced by a professional
- DO NOT use cleaners containing acid or bleach for regular cleaning tasks
- DO NOT use wax cleaners, oil-based detergents or sealants to maintain your tile (sealants may be used on grout joints and natural stone)
- DO NOT use harsh cleaning aids like steel wool pads or scouring pads containing metal
- DO NOT use a cleaning agent that contains colour on unglazed tiles
How to remove everyday spills
Food spills – Scoop up food with a plastic spoon. Blot dry with a dry white cloth. Spray the area with a neutral cleaner and wipe off excess with a clean cloth.
Liquid spills – Blot up the excess with a clean, dry cloth. Then clean the area with a tile cleaner and wipe off excess with a clean cloth.
Mud – Let the mud stain dry completely. Remove dried mud with a soft plastic nylon brush. Then, clean the area with a tile cleaner and wipe off excess with a clean cloth.
