Embracing the Dark Side with Black Bathrooms

Black in interior design is often shied away from. While it can be incredibly luxurious and a real statement, if used incorrectly, it can create a dark, dingey, and claustrophobic feeling space. Because of this, it’s important to use black the right way, especially in bathrooms when cleanliness and freshness are central.

Why Choose a Black Bathroom?

Black is an intimidating colour to work with in interior design, so it’s understandable if you’re off-put by implementing it in your home, especially in the bathroom. White, bright, and airy bathrooms are very popular, but we think it’s time to give the dark side a chance. Here are some of the reasons to choose a black bathroom:

• Make a statement. Stepping out of your interior design comfort zone is important, and black can help you do just that. This shade is sure to make a statement in your bathroom, whether you go for black tub, fixtures, or black bathroom floor tiles.
• Add a touch of luxury. Black is a very luxurious colour, and when used well, it can truly transform your bathroom into a five-star hotel! Just take a look at the South Lodge Project we worked on to see a great example of this.
• Create a more expansive space. You may not believe it until you see it, but just like white, black can make a space feel much larger than it is because of the moody dimension it brings. This is especially impactful when black is used on both the flooring and the walls.

The Importance of Natural Lighting in Black Bathrooms

While you may opt for black because of the classy moodiness it conveys, it’s also important to remember to incorporate the right amount of natural light. Artificial light, such as overhead spotlights, LED feature lighting, or wall-mounted fittings, are great for ambience and functionality at night, but during the day, natural lighting works much better. If you’re working with just one window, or your space feels dingy rather than chic, mirrors are a great way to help brighten up your bathroom and let the light bounce around.

Of course, one of the only drawbacks of black used in these rooms is that mould and mildew are a little more hidden. Because of this, you must have windows that can air out the room and decrease the chances of hidden mould. Staying on top of cleaning is important, but bacteria thrive in wet, humid, and dark environments, so ensuring your bathroom is well-vented with windows is crucial.

If you’re on board with the all-black trend, bathroom tiles are the best way to go about it. When paired with bright white or marble, as seen below, it makes a statement and draws the eye to these areas of the bathroom. So, with that in mind, implementing black in this way is a great idea if there’s a specific pocket of your space you’d like to show off.
