Not all interior design trends are created equal – while some take the world by storm, others just don’t take off (or disappear into oblivion after a decrease in popularity).
At Roccia, we’re looking forward to 2018 and all the exciting things that a new year will bring to the interior design world, but we also have to mention some of the interior design trends that are best left in 2017.
So, which interior design trends just weren’t good enough this year?
Antique Carpets
Retro is all the rage at the moment, but that doesn’t mean everything antique has been popular.
On the contrary, carpets and rugs are one of those things that a lot of people are peculiar about, so they choose to avoid the distressed style.
These carpets and rugs oftentimes have the opposite effect, appearing old-fashioned and outdated instead of an item that brings a room together.
For this reason, it’s likely we won’t be seeing much of this trend next year!
Open Shelving in Kitchens
While this tends to look great in photos, the truth is that for many people having everything on display doesn’t work for them and their lifestyle.
This is could be due to every inch of space being precious, or the fact that things can look cluttered when they aren’t hidden away in cupboards. Therefore, this trend is best left in the past unless you’re dedicated enough to do it well!
Wall Art
While 2017 saw a rise in popularity of decorative items such as inspirational quotes on walls (especially those that take up a lot of wall room), it appears that many people are now completely over it.
Be it words like ‘love’, ‘relax’, or full-blown sentences, certain types of wall art appear to be making their way back into people’s lofts in the new year.
If you’re looking to remove your wall art because you’ve outgrown it, why not add wall tiles instead? From porcelain, slate and ceramic to stone, travertine and glass, there is so much to choose from, allowing you to create the walls you always envisioned in 2018!
Macramé
Who doesn’t love macramé? Well, apparently a lot of people!
This has been a popular trend for a few years now, but it seems like 2018 will leave it behind.
There are many ways to add a bohemian flair to your home without relying on this decorative choice, such as big, leafy plants or smaller succulents.
(No More) Indigo Everywhere
There is no denying that indigo is a beautiful colour but, for many people, it might be time to retire it for 2018 – or at least take it down a notch or two.
Experiment with mixing fabrics and colours and if you do want to use this bold colour, use neutrals as a contrast.
From sofa cushions to kitchen and bathroom tiles, for instance, indigo can be used as an accent to beautifully complement your décor.
Brass Begone?
Sure, this type of material has been hugely popular lately, as it brings a shiny and cosy aesthetic to a home or space. However, for some, brass has been a little overused.
Instead of completely cutting it out of your décor in 2018, however, the solution may be easier: mix and match with other metals, such as copper or bronze, for example.
This way, your brass accents can draw the eye in a pleasing manner, and not overwhelm the interior design.
Some interior design trends are never as widespread as others, or have stopped being popular, but a new year may be the perfect time to breathe new life into a home with a refreshed interior design.
From a change in décor to adding a whole new tiled wall or flooring, 2018 promises to be a year full of great design that everyone will love.
